1. Marriott was born in Marriott, Utah in 1900. This city was named by his great-grandfather. He grew up as a cowboy, herding sheep and riding horses. His ethnicity was American/White and his family was of the Mormon faith. He had a strong faith that led him to become a missionary. His parents also believed in independent thinking and hard work, so he grew up making his own decisions. After returning from his missionary work, he attended the University of Utah.
2. After he graduated, Marriott and his wife (that he met in college) opened an A&W root beer stand. After visiting a friend in Washington DC, he found the weather there to be perfect for the root beer stand. Marriott and the founder of A&W opened up their own stand in 1927 called “Hot Shoppes”. In 1957, he opened the first Marriott hotel in Virginia and in 1959, he opened a second hotel. His first business in restaurants became so popular that his cuisine was used on airplanes.
Marriott was a person who believed in hard work and independence. He is known to have been exceptionally kind to his employees because to him, when the employees are happy, the customers are happy, and that was his main goal. He was a man who believed in perseverance and perfection and because of this, his Marriott Company was able to create hundreds of hotels in America and around the world, restaurants, airline cuisine, and 2 theme parks. His values and character were one of a kind and he showed American society that hard work pays off in the end. I want to open up my own hotel someday and his philosophy is one that I would love to follow. His values are strong and important in any business, especially that of the hospitality industry. He values making his customers feel happy and at home, which is one of my biggest goals.
